Microsoft targets Google, Yahoo with Web-hosted SMB wares

March 3, 2008 (Computerworld) Microsoft Corp. announced Monday the trial availability of Web-hosted versions of its popular Exchange and SharePoint collaboration software. The move appears to be a strong declaration of Microsoft's intent to blunt Google Inc.'s rise in the software-as-a-service (SaaS) market.

In a keynote speech kicking off Microsoft's SharePoint Conference in Seattle, Chairman Bill Gates will announce the expanded online offerings, which U.S.-based companies can sign up to beta-test.

Gates is also expected to announce that more than 100 million SharePoint licenses have been sold, generating a total of $1 billion for Microsoft.

Online versions of Exchange and SharePoint will be generally available to companies of all sizes in the second half of the year, according to John Betz, a director in Microsoft's online services group. No prices were disclosed, though Betz said companies that already have Exchange or SharePoint running on their premises will get some credit towards the cost of subscribing to the online service version.

"If you've already invested in the software, the price you'll pay will be less than if you own nothing today," Betz said.

Microsoft will aim for companies with about 50 to 250 PCs, or 100 to 500 users. And the services will be targeted to appeal to business IT staffers, rather than to try to go around them, as Google has said it is trying to do with its fast-rising Google Apps offering.

"Companies tell us pretty consistently that they want enterprise-grade solutions to meet the challenges they face, and that they are concerned about consumer 'hand-me-downs' forming the basis of their business solutions," Betz said.

Though Microsoft is taking another step toward competing with its own partner ecosystem, members of that community insisted that its entry into the market will help, not hurt them.

"I truly believe that the rising tide will lift all boats," wrote Ravi Agarwal, CEO of GroupSpark, a provider of hosted applications including Exchange, SharePoint and others, in an e-mail. "Microsoft will bring greater awareness to the market, and when prospective customers look at the Microsoft hosted offering more closely and realize that critical features like BlackBerry Enterprise Server are missing -- they will flock to us."

"I think this will accelerate adoption on Microsoft's, rather than Google's, platform," said Keith McCall, chief technology officer of Azaleos Corp., a maker of managed Exchange server appliances. "That's good for us, since we think any company with more than 250 employees will still want to keep Exchange and other key apps on-premise."

Besides Exchange and SharePoint, Microsoft also plans to offer online versions of its Office Communications Server (OCS) unified communications software and its LiveMeeting web conferencing software, confirmed Betz.

Microsoft has been readying these online offerings for nearly three years. But until today, Microsoft had maintained that its "managed services," when launched, would only be offered to businesses buying more than 5,000 seats or more.

Rather, Microsoft had insisted it would rely on its ecosystem of partners, which since 2002 have been allowed to host and sell online versions of Exchange and SharePoint.

But with the rapid rise in interest in Google Apps and Yahoo Inc.'s Zimbra, Microsoft decided to take matters into its own hands.

"It appears that this entire initiative ... is driven largely in response to competitive threats from Google's Gmail and Yahoo's Zimbra," Agarwal wrote.

Microsoft's services, which are scheduled to be commercially available in the second half of this year, will back up its claim of 99.9% availability with financial guarantees, Betz said. Services and data will be redundantly hosted at Microsoft's 13 data centers.

Betz insisted that Microsoft's move into small and midsize business Web hosting isn't a betrayal to longtime partners. Partners will still be able to offer their own hosted versions of Exchange, SharePoint and others.

And similar to its upcoming hosted Dynamics CRM software, Microsoft will force companies interested in buying the Microsoft-hosted Exchange and SharePoint to go through its channel partners.

"Partners who make the sale for us will make money," he said. "We are not cutting them out; we are expanding the opportunity."

Betz said that hosting firms can also spruce up their offerings by adding integration to non-Microsoft software such as Cisco Systems Inc.'s voice-over-IP software, or with server software to support BlackBerry devices, to differentiate themselves from Microsoft's online software, which will integrate only with other Microsoft software.

Meanwhile, Agarwal said that hosting firms should also be able to provide better support and uptime than Microsoft.

"This won't be a robust offering for at least three to four years, as is true with any new Microsoft offering," Agarwal said.

More than 3,000 attendees are expected at the SharePoint conference, which will run through Thursday.

Microsoft also announced the availability of the free Microsoft Search Server 2008 Express software, which complements SharePoint. It also plans to release Silverlight Blueprint for SharePoint, a tool kit aimed at helping developers create rich Web applications for corporate intranets that take advantage of the Silverlight runtime's multimedia capabilities. The Blueprint can be downloaded from Microsoft's site.

Organic electroluminescent material itself emits light, so there is no need for backlighting. In order to make best use of this characteristic, the display includes only the panel and the surrounding case; the image-processing system, the power supply, and the rest of the circuits are all located in the base of the set. The panel is composed of two 0.7-mm glass plates with enough electroluminescent material between them to emit light - just a few hundred nanometers thick. In other words, the panel itself is only 1.4 mm thick. The entire display is just 3 mm thick at its thinnest point.

Supported by an aluminum cantilever arm, the screen appears almost to be floating in space. The display can be tilted 15 degrees forward and 50 degrees backward, and all of the sockets for connecting the TV are located on the base.
The screen resolution is 960 x 540 dots, and the sets come equipped with a three-wave tuner that allows them to receive terrestrial, broadcast satellite, and 110-degree commercial satellite broadcasts. Production has been set at 2,000 units per month, and the TVs will retail for about ¥200,000 ($1,818 at ¥110 to the dollar).

Google growth isn't clicking

Fears that Silicon Valley's Internet prodigy, Google, may be getting a few gray hairs were triggered Tuesday by a negative report about its ad business that sent its shares to a nine-month low.

The once high-flying stock closed Tuesday at $464.19, and has plunged almost $300 from its high of more than $740 in November, amid worries the search giant may not escape the effects of the slowing economy.

Google's paid "clicks" on search ads fell 7 percent between December and January and have not grown from the previous year, according to comScore, which measures Internet audiences. That report sent Google's shares down 4.6 percent Tuesday, and followed Monday's 4.2 percent fall.

That Google is a moneymaker is not in doubt, but investor confidence in its ability to keep that growth stoked has ebbed.

"There are a lot of nervous investors" who fear that a decline in consumer spending and advertising is about to show up in lower Google revenues, said Rob Sanderson of American Technology Research in San Francisco. "That's why the stock is reacting so violently," he said.

The Mountain View Internet search company derives 99 percent of its revenue from advertising, which usually suffers during slowdowns in the economy.

But the online, text-based advertising it dominates has been so popular with advertisers that it seemed positioned to ride out a recession without much trouble. Now that optimism is fading.

UBS Securities joined several other investment houses in lowering its outlook for Google, dropping its estimate for Google's future stock price from $650 to $590. It predicted "a bumpy ride" for the stock over the next few months.

Bear Stearns expressed concern over reports of lower volumes of clicks from consumers "possibly due to the economic slowdown," though it remains "bullish on the fundamentals" of online advertising.

Martin Pyykkonen of Global Crown Capital said an unanswered question is whether the drop in clicks was caused by consumers viewing fewer ads online or fewer advertisers bidding on Google's keywords.

"Some say Google is fairly immune because advertisers have bought into search advertising, and that's probably true," Pyykkonen said, "but they're not totally immune to a slowdown."

Also of concern is that Google already dominates a mature market for text-based advertising and may have little room for growth.

The company already controls 90 percent of its market, estimated UBS analyst Benjamin A. Schachter.

He said Google's key business in text-based advertising peaked in terms of net revenue growth in 2005 and has been slowing since then. "The question is, how quickly will that slow?"

As for other initiatives, Google Maps and YouTube have been successes but haven't generated much in the way of new advertising opportunities so far, Schachter said.

Analyst Trip Chowdhry of Global Equities Research in San Francisco said he thinks text-based search is becoming a commodity and Google needs to score some successes with new initiatives.

Investors worried

Institutional investors are worried that Google is not addressing competitive challenges, Chowdhry said. He said users are avoiding Google's sponsored links, which are paid for by advertisers, in favor of "organic" links that are not revenue producers.

Management "failed to anticipate the shifts in behavior patterns of Web surfers and has gotten too defocused," Chowdhry said.

But most analysts said the comScore data is useful only to a point.

"ComScore is not the Bible and you can only glean from that," said Pyykkonen of Global Crown Capital.

Ad revenue worries knock Google

Fears a slowing US economy may be hitting Google have led analysts to cut the share price target for the firm.

The move came after research firm Comscore reported a sluggish January in the viewing of paid-for-advertisements on the Google site.

The total clicking on to Google's paid adverts was 532 million, down from 533 million a year before, Comscore said.

UBS cut its price target from $650 to $590, and BMO from $690 to $590. Google shares fell 4.57% to $464 on Tuesday.

Its shares reached a peak of $747.24 in early November 2007 and were just below $700 as 2008 began.

However, now it appears that shares in Google may be getting dragged down by the sluggish US economy.

Wider worries

Although there was strong growth in searches on Google's US website in January, there was a decline in the number of people clicking on through to the paid-for advertisements which create the bulk of Google revenues.

UBS analyst Benjamin Schachter also warned that international growth, including the UK, Google's second-largest market, was a concern.

There had first been signs of a slowdown at Google after it reported disappointing profits at the end of January.

Google's profits were up 17% to $1.21bn (£608m) for the three months to the end of December, but some analysts had been hoping for stronger growth.

Microsoft Fined Record EU899 Million by EU Regulator

Feb. 27 (Bloomberg) -- European Union regulators fined Microsoft Corp. a record 899 million euros ($1.35 billion) for failing to comply with a 2004 antitrust order to stop overcharging for using its patents to connect to Windows.

``Microsoft was the first company in 50 years of EU competition policy that the commission has had to fine for failure to comply with an antitrust decision,'' European Competition Commissioner Neelie Kroes said in a statement today in Brussels. ``I hope that today's decision closes a dark chapter in Microsoft's record of non-compliance.''

Microsoft, the world's largest software maker, announced last week that it will help competitors' software work better with some products, such as Office, in an effort to allay EU regulators' concerns over its dominance. While today's ruling ends the 2004 antitrust case, for which the company was fined the previous record 497 million euros, the EU has two new investigations under way over Microsoft's business practices.

The fine brings the total penalty to 1.68 billion euros in the case. Microsoft shares fell 7 cents to $28.31 at 10:38 a.m. in Nasdaq Stock Market trading. In a statement, the Redmond, Washington-based software maker said it would review the decision, which found Microsoft overcharged for patent licenses that rivals needed to connect products to the Windows platform.

``These fines are about the past issues that have been resolved,'' the company said. ``As we demonstrated last week with our new interoperability principles and specific actions to increase the openness of our products, we are focusing on steps that will improve things for the future.''

Increased Oversight

The commission, known for vetoing General Electric Co.'s proposed $47 billion merger with Honeywell International Inc. in 2001, has ramped up its oversight of U.S. technology companies such as Intel Corp., Rambus Inc. and Qualcomm Inc. in recent years. Last July the regulator charged Intel with abusing its dominance in the computer-chip market. It's also probing potential antitrust abuses by Rambus and Qualcomm over royalty rates on chip-technology licenses.

Microsoft sought to limit potential EU fines by agreeing in October to make network data available to open-source software developers so server programs can connect to the Windows operating system, which runs 95 percent of the world's personal computers.

Brent Williams, a New York-based analyst with Benchmark Co. who recommends investors buy Microsoft shares and doesn't own any himself, said the fine isn't large enough to hurt Microsoft.

``It's not about the financial impact,'' he said. ``If Microsoft has $1.3 billion of cash disappearing suddenly off the balance sheet, it doesn't affect their ability to invest in growth at all.''

Appeal Possible

Microsoft can appeal the penalty at the European courts in Luxembourg. A European court upheld the commission's ruling against Microsoft in September, meaning the company wasn't in compliance for three years.

On March 1, 2007, the EU threatened Microsoft with millions of euros in daily fines backdated to December 2005 for failing to fully comply with the 2004 antitrust order.

Under that decision, Microsoft had to provide data to rivals to allow servers to connect to the Windows platform. When patent licenses were necessary for that network data, Microsoft was required to charge ``reasonable'' royalties.

Last month, EU regulators opened investigations into whether Microsoft is using its dominance in word processing and spreadsheets to thwart rivals and whether the company illegally tied an Internet browser to Windows. Today's fine isn't related to the new probes.

`Talk is Cheap'

Benchmark's Williams said the EU will continue its ``aggressive'' stance toward Microsoft, ultimately helping its rivals.

``Over time, every competitor is going to look at that and say `is there an opportunity for me to take advantage of the fact that Microsoft can't do X without further legal problems, and can I exploit that?'''

Kroes said at a press conference that the commission would take into consideration ``any changes'' Microsoft makes to its business practices that are relevant to the two new cases. She said that it's the fifth time that Microsoft has made an announcement about improving interoperability.

``Talk is cheap,'' Kroes said. ``Let's wait and let's find the reality in this case. They have to deliver and implement.''

In July 2006, the EU also imposed a 280.5 million-euro penalty on the software maker for failing to license information to rivals on how Windows communicates over a network. It was the first time that the EU had fined a company for failing to comply with an antitrust order.

Google Tests New Moneymaker

Google is adding another way of generating revenue -- in the works is a new advertising network that will complement its current fraud-prone AdSense network.

The new cost-per-action, or CPA, network will pay only if net users perform a specific action such as making a purchase or generating a sales lead; in contrast, the AdSense model pays based on the number of clicks an advertisement receives and is particularly susceptible to "click fraud," the act of clicking on an ad multiple times to generate revenue.

CPA networks, also called affiliate-marketing networks, attract new customers to merchant websites through an independent "middleman" website.

Google has asked its current AdSense customers to take part in the trial of its CPA network, and a Google representative confirmed that the company will be testing the new network.

"We're always looking for new ways to provide effective and useful features to advertisers, publishers and users. As part of these efforts we are currently testing a cost-per-action pricing model to give advertisers more flexibility and provide publishers another way to earn revenue through AdSense. We're pleased with how the test is progressing and will continue to gather feedback from advertisers and publishers."

Google's new model follows last week's introduction of eBay's own CPA network, dubbed eBay AdContext, in which affiliates receive a sales commission.

A number of smaller companies such as ValueClick and DoubleClick already provide affiliate network services.

The buzz about Google's new offering already circulating on affiliate-network site message boards seems to indicate a mixed reaction from webmasters, but that it will likely be popular with advertisers, in part because of an anticipated low-fee or free signup

Advertising Programs - Perhaps the most obvious changes in the past few months have been with the addition of a variety of viable advertising options for bloggers looking to make money from their blogs. The most common way bloggers seem to earn money online is via the contextual ad program from Google - Adsense. A more recent addition that many are using successfully are Chitika’s eMiniMalls and WidgetBucks, Text Link Ads.
Azoogle Ads, Intelli Txt, DoubleClick, Tribal Fusion, Adbrite, Clicksor, AdHearUs, Kanoodle, Pheedo, TextAds, Bidvertiser, Fastclick and Value Click (to name just some of the options) and there is a smorgasbord of options. Of course there is more to come with MSN Adcenter and YPN both in beta testing and with a variety of other advertising system currently in development (YPN is only available to US publishers).

The habit of people continually changing the style of clothing worn, which is now worldwide, at least among urban populations, is a distinctively Western one. Though there are signs from earlier. In 8th century Cordoba, Spain, Ziryab, a famous musician and stylist migrant from Baghdad, introduced the first germ of fashion in Europe. With over a hundred different models alone in the Korean market, it's no surprise that it has models to accommodate almost everyone’s needs. In come the SGH-D880 incorporating two separate SIM card slots and Dual Active Standby connectivity that will enable users to enjoy the functionality of two phones in one.

At first glance it resembles another Samsung slider mobile, the SGH-D900 although this model seems to be slightly thicker. It has the usual must have features of all mobile phones these days: GPRS/EDGE, Tri-band support, 3 Megapixels Camera, 2.3” QVGA TFT LCD, Stereo FM and support of external flash memory (MicroSD). The main feature of the D880 however is that it can support 2 sims to be on standby at the same time. More on this feature later. Included in the box is the charger, headset, Li-ion battery, usb cable, Samsung PC Studio software and a user guide. The headset, charger and USB cable all connects to the one and only propriety connector on the bottom right side of the phone, so better not lose them.

As you can see, the dual line nature is clear when u open the back of the phone which revels 2 sim card holder. It will still work if you use only one, but I’ll be using my own Maxis line and another loaned Celcom line to test the phone’s dual sim capability

The difference between them is all calls and SMS made will always use the primary sim, while the secondary sim is only on standby to receive any calls or SMS to it. There is a small button on the top left side of the phone to allow you quickly change which sim you want to use as primary. However when doing so, the phone will automatically reboot with the primary roles on the sims now exchanged. The whole process takes about 1 minute so it isn’t exactly a “quick” process. Such a feature would certainly make this phone a complete waste of time, if not for the ability to choose which sim to use to make a call or sent SMS. A ability I nearly missed when reviewing the phone.

The keypads are decent but has a lack of quality about it. Basically it feels very plastic and the lack of depth doesn’t really help. I would assume a RM1,799 phone would at least have a proper and solid keypad. Also due to the slide nature of the phone, some important buttons are on the top part which will take some time to get use to since it’s a fair bit of travel for your fingers from the numeric keypad.

The menu system is classic Samsung, basically a love or hate affair. Current Samsung owners should have no problem mastering the menu but Motorola veteran like me needed some time to get use to the certain features. The few which stand out was for example any SMS sent out won’t automatically be saved in the sent folder. You have to select another option called sent and save if you want to save that particular SMS in the sent folder. Also the OK button in the middle of the scroll pad, in any other phone if you press it from the main screen, you expect the menu to show up, but not on any Samsung. Instead you get the browser firing up which fails to connect. The phone did came with preset accounts for Digi, Celcom and Maxis, but all failed due to some unknown reason. The settings were all correct as per my current phone.

The jukebox player plays MP3, AAC+ and WMA format with relatively good quality on the stereo headsets as compared when using the onboard mono speaker. Pair this phone with a good Bluetooth headset and you have a decent portable music library what with the external MicroSD support which now comes in 4GB flavor.

The 3.0 Megapixel camera that comes equipped with the D880 is great on quality. Even though it lacks a flash like most camera phone these days, night photos are of decent quality. The only gripe I have about the camera is the 1 sec delay. After the press, it takes the D880 roughly 1 sec to autofocus the subject (if it is still there) before activating the shutter to take the photo. Couldn’t find any way to fixed it. On the bright side, the camera does come with lots of interesting and funky photo templates that you can play around with.

Battery life is reasonable with 2 sims on standby, the D880 manage to last for around 3 days with average use. Even when using the built-in FM radio for a few hours didn’t seem to affect the battery life much. Speaking of which requires the headset to be plugged in since it uses that as the antenna. But you don’t have to use them to listen to the radio if you don’t want to, as the D880 can also output via its mono speaker. Good thinking on this part.

Overall a good phone, the D880 has its share of hiccups, but I don’t think there is any other dual sim phone which comes close to its features and design. If you carry around multiple mobiles and wish to cut down on them, you phone has arrive. But keep the 3G/HSDPA one, and replace the other since you’ll be surfing on EDGE only with the D880.

The army ant genus Dorylus, also known as driver ants, safari ants or siafu, are found primarily in central and east Africa,though the range extends to tropical Asia. There are some 70 species presently recognized, though another 60 names are applied at the rank of subspecies.
Unlike the members of the Ecitoninae, they do form anthills, although these are temporary (a few days up to three months). Each colony can contain over 20 million individuals. As in their New World counterparts, there is a soldier class among the workers, which is larger, with a very large head and pincer-like mandibles. 意外：野花也能卖钱

1999年7月，21岁的张毓一毕业就当上了一名导游，日子过得时尚、充裕。

2000年夏天，张毓带团去海南，她在路边的小店吃了一些当地水果，没想到引起了食物中毒，一连好几个小时昏迷不醒。后来经过抢救，她才算脱离了危险，可是食物中毒损害了她的脑神经，再后来，她出现了视力模糊、说话困难、呼吸困难等症状。张毓对导游工作越来越感到力不从心。2000年10月，她无奈地辞去了工作。

张毓想换一份相对轻松、利于身体恢复的工作，但用人单位得知她的身体状况后都拒绝了。几经波折后，她才在一家书店找到了做售货员的工作。

2001年3月，张毓周末回到乡下老家。这里山峦叠嶂，风光秀美。张毓在山林里呼吸着清新的空气，心情一下子舒畅了很多。她在山上采摘了很多野花，准备带回城，放到房间里。回城之后，张毓的朋友们都很喜欢这些野花，她们围着张毓让她讲解这些野花的名字、种类和生长情况，张毓很开心地给她们讲了半天，还给她们每人送了几枝。

张毓有个在花店上班的朋友李霞，拿了一束花，决定到花店里试着卖一下。

第二天一下班，李霞就兴冲冲地跑来找她，说那束野花下午被一个女孩以30元的价格买走了，她还说以后要经常来买。拿着李霞递来的30元钱，张毓动心了：难道野花真的有这么好的消费市场吗?她决定再试试。于是她约了李霞周末一起去再采些野花回来卖。果然，几百枝野花一个星期内全部卖完，老板还让她继续去采集野花，有多少他收购多少。除去给花店老板的折扣，她一下挣了700多元，这些钱相当于她在书店上班一个月的工资。有了这笔“意外之财”，张毓意识到一个难得的机会来了。

辞职：野花里寻找商机

看到市场反应不错，张毓想走卖野花这条创业之路。但是，采集野花并不是那么容易的事情，一方面，野花遍布在山野之间，采集起来有一定的难度和危险性；另一方面，各种野花的花期也不一致。她想，要把野花的生意长期做下去，只能去专门种植野花，然后再定期卖给花店。

主意一定，她果断地辞职，带着积攒的几千元钱回家了。听说她要回家种野花，朋友、父母都劝她打消这个念头，在他们看来，很少有人能靠野花做出一番事业的。

张毓是个有主见的女孩，她相信自己的想法没错，父母也只得“缴械投降”。于是，张毓很快把父亲的苗圃进行了扩大和改造，把原来只有一两亩地的苗圃扩大成了五六亩地，并拉起了一道篱笆墙。她从山上移植来了不少木本野生植物，同时也采集了一些野花的花种，准备播种。附近的村民们知道她的想法后，纷纷笑她异想天开。

张毓不理睬别人的嘲讽，继续忙碌着。虽然她发动了父母一起采集野花种子，但是人手还是不够。她就在村里打出了收购野花花种和野花幼苗的广告，山民们祖祖辈辈生活在草木繁茂的山里，听说这些不起眼的野花野草也能卖钱，都不再嘲笑她了，很快给张毓采集了很多花种，挖来了很多野生花草。

张毓把草本花种按不同的种类种在地里，把一些适合观赏的红毛杜鹃、野蔷薇等木本植株移植到了盆里。由于野生花草的生命力很旺盛，移植后基本上都成活了，但她还是一点都不敢大意，除草、施肥、浇水，她都一丝不苟干得很认真，几个月后，种植园里开满了野菊花、小紫罗兰、蒲公英、白头翁、开口箭等野花。

张毓摘下一些花准备卖，考虑到有些店主不愿意接收野花，她订做了一些塑料包装纸，把野花按照不同的花色搭配包装好，来到西安推销。她印制了几盒名片，先把花放到十几家花店里让别人捎带着卖，如果能卖掉再打电话找她进货，很多店主都是带着疑惑的目光接收了她的花。果然不出她所料，花刚放出去不久，她就接到了电话，这些野花很快就被热衷时尚、追求情调的年轻男女买走了。她乘胜追击，和这些花店签订合约，每个星期给他们提供一批鲜野花。

有了固定的销路，张毓的干劲更大了，为了保证冬天也有鲜花出售，她建起了保温棚；为了确保实验能成功，她专门跑到西北农林科技大学请教有关专家，虚心学习野生植物种植和冬季保温的技术。

2001年底，辛苦了大半年的张毓算了笔账，除去各种开支，她发现半年忙碌下来并没有挣到多少钱。郁闷之余，她开始分析原因，原来自己把野花作为一次性消费品出售，这个办法是不太合理的，一方面，野花的生长周期长、花期短，一次剪下来后只能重新再种，这期间她就无花可卖，自然生意也就受到影响；另一方面，野花比普通花草照顾起来要费神得多，但价格却差不多。分析完这一切后，她决定在来年分批次种植野花，让每个月都有野花开放。但是，怎么样提高野花的“含金量”、能把野花卖得更贵一些呢?

目标：把野花做成产业

经过一番深思熟虑，张毓决定转换经营思路，把野花从“一次性消费品”变成艺术品和纪念品。她首先想到的是把像熏衣草之类花冠细小、不易褪色的花制成干花，摆放在室内作为装饰品。经过反复筛选和对比，她挑出了一批适合制作干花的野花。第一批干花在2002年初上市了，这些干花一上市就显示出很旺盛的销售势头。

初战告捷，张毓又开始了新的探索。她想到，城里有不少孩子没有机会到山里来，他们在课堂学的一些野生植物根本无法见到，要是能制作一些野花野草的标本，注明其名称、学名和英文名称，应该会受到孩子们的喜欢。另外，要是给风干后的标本加个相框，也可以作为装饰品挂在室内的墙上，城里很多人都向往田园风光，这些散发着泥土气息的野花野草就可以带给他们视觉的享受!

张毓为自己的这个想法感到很兴奋，她做好了标本，订制了一些大小不等的相框，把这些标本夹入相框后，她带着几十个标本到了西安。有几家小学对她的标本很感兴趣，有一所学校一下就以50 元至200元不等的价格订制了上百个标本。这些标本在礼品店同样一炮打响，来买标本的大人、小孩都有，把礼品店的老板乐得合不拢嘴。为了加快生产标本的步伐，张毓回家组织了十几个村民帮助她一起制作标本，依然是供不应求。

同时，她移植的一些适合观赏的植物也可以出手了。她请父亲给每一盆观赏植物估好价格，联系到某花木交易市场的一位朋友请他帮助代卖，一个月下来，卖出了100盆，收入5000多元。

为了减少销售的中间环节以便增加利润，2003年9月，她把家里的种植园交给父亲料理，自己在西安市开了一家花店。她的花店很特别，不仅卖野生鲜花，还有干花、盆栽和盆景，野花店生意很快红火起来。她买来了很多关于插花的图书，仔细研究插花的花色搭配、花叶搭配。她把很多人视为野草的蒲公英、狗尾巴草都作为配花加进了花束中，用野花独创出了许多别致又美观的插花作品。她给这些作品起了好听的名字：百鸟朝凤、俏佳人、星星点灯……这些插花作品令人们大开眼界。张毓还办了个插花艺术培训班，免费教来店里看花的女士们插花常识，试图营造一种良好的消费文化，让人们接受野花这个新鲜事物。她的努力没有白费，参加过学习的女士们大多成了她忠实的消费者，她们还把这个有特色的小店介绍给身边的熟人和朋友。于是，更多的顾客拥向了她的花店。

进入2004年，张毓的花店步入了快速发展阶段。她的干花制品已经形成了10多个系列，标本相框也丰富到了100多个品种。由于不断有人加盟连锁，她一连开了5家连锁店，由她统一提供货源，这些花店开业后的经营状况都比较好。

2004年，她成立了自己的花木工艺制品公司，通过参加全国农高会和商贸会，又有几十家外地客商代理了她的干花制品和标本相框。

现在，张毓的种植园已经扩大到了 50亩地，种植了山梅花、报春花等几百个品种的野生花草。随着“自驾游”的流行，越来越多的城里人周末开车到山里去游玩。张毓敏锐地捕捉到了这个商机，她把自己的种植园改为免费参观的植物观光园，并不失时机地提出了“种花DIY”的概念，让城里人在自己的种植园里参观种花的步骤、过程，向他们提供花种、苗株和泥土，让他们自己动手种花养花，并传授养花的知识。这一招吸引了很多城里人去她的植物观光园去参观，自然，他们走的时候都不会忘记买上几盆花回家去养，由此她又多了一个创收项目。

如今，张毓靠卖野花买了房子和车子。她认为自己的成功很简单，仅仅是把自己的想法一步步地变成现实，而不是像很多人，虽然有美好的理想却没有行动，直到把自己的想法带进坟墓。

Globalization means a world that is interdependent between each country or an integrated world. An important factor that brings globalization is technology. The improvement of technology has enabled one to communicate, interact and travel around the world. For some globalized products, such as Mc Donald, Coca-cola, and Visa Credit Cards, the world from different parts have started to change and develop to a same generation. In the situation where one may affect another, there have been many changes in indigenous cultures in the world, which is the native cultures from different parts of the world. This is reflected in changes in economics, social behavior, religion, language, art and creativity. These impacts may be helpful or harmful to human beings.

The most concerned issue of the impacts of globalization on indigenous cultures is the economic change. Due to globalization, changes in the financial system in any banks affect one and another, and the financial system may give a direct reflection on economic activities. According to Hill(2005), about 25 years before, Islamic banking does not condemn interest, even though it is defined as unjust by Koran. After the indigenous people such as Pakistan adopted the condemnation system, all the Islamic banks from the world have averagely obtained more than 16 percents profit from its capital. Besides, globalization also improves the lifestyle of indigenous peoples in the form of urbanization. In the past, indigenous people live in small villages, but they live in cities now. It was supported by Some 300 million Chinese farmers are forecast to more to urban areas (2007) which reported in Beijing that, a forecast of over 300 million farmers in China will move to urban areas in the next 20 years. This is because globalization of the world trading has discovered the potential market of China which has huge population. This had provided more job opportunities. With higher income, they can obtain better living. This situation claims that, globalization has helped to develop the world economy and increase the production of indigenous peoples. Therefore, globalization has greatly affected the indigenous cultures.

Secondly, globalization has changed the social behavior among the indigenous. Firework was invented by the indigenous of China, and it was played during the Chinese New Year festival. Due to globalization, indigenous of Malaysia play fireworks on their New Year festival before it was illegalized. This is because globalization allowed fireworks to be traded. However, firework is dangerous, and some may suggest that this is the negative impact of globalization. Furthermore, entertainments of indigenous people were changed. In the past, the Chinese in China play dice or mahjong, but they play poker which was origin from western now. However, poker cards have been used as a gambling tool by the Chinese, and this has been argued that globalization has provided more opportunities of gambling to the world. Therefore, globalization may seriously affect the social behavior of indigenous people, and it can be a negative effect.

Thirdly, the impact of globalization on indigenous people has included the religion and beliefs. As the world is now more interdependent, religious effects are now more noticeable. Esposito (1999) claimed that, the increased of Muslim believers had raised the number of mosques in America, in which the demand had increased. This is because globalization has built up a better interaction between the Muslim and the indigenous of America. When the missionaries were allowed to travel to other countries, they might have the chances to influence the indigenous people in their beliefs. However, this may brings a lot of conflicts. The indigenous people who had practice different religion with their own cultures may quarrel or even fight for their beliefs. Besides, the change in beliefs also affects decision making. Payton (2007) states that “Dawn Gibbins, the founder and chairman of international flooring business Flowcrete attributes much of her company’s success to the ancient art of feng shui”. This shows that the English indigenous is affected by the Chinese beliefs, and they might make a lot of decision due to feng shui. Feng shui is not recognized by the scientist yet as it is not perfectly supported by scientific evidences. Some may claim that this is a negative effect because the decisions made are irrational. Consequently, the impacts of globalization on indigenous peoples’ religion may seem to be positive or negative effect.

Besides, impact on language is obviously seen. Globalization has enabled one to immigrate to another country. For an example, Malaysia, a country of multi races with multi languages might have an advantage in communicating with foreigners. As referred to Nazaruddin Hj.mohd Jali rt al. (2003), the official language of Malaysia is Malay, but a few of languages are commonly practiced in the society too. Normally, Malaysian can speak Malay, English and even mandarin. This is because of the immigration of Chinese from China in the past, and the recognized of English as the international language by the world. But this may lead to a situation where the native unable to speak their indigenous language in a proper fluent. They might use a lot of other languages in their conversation and have less practice on their indigenous language. To conclude, the impacts of globalization on indigenous languages can be beneficial or harmful to the society.

Lastly, traditional art and creativity of indigenous people might be affected by globalization too. As globalization provide the opportunities for artists to exchange knowledge with one and another, one may come out with a fusion design which includes different styles from different cultures. There might be a better invention in art, as the advantages from the art of different indigenous cultures are adopted. According to Payton (2007), Gibbins who is a success business women practise feng shui to redesign her company’s logo. This situation claims that the design of English indigenous was affected by the art of Chinese feng shui. However, when the norms were break, the traditional art might be evolved and lost its original form. When this situation continuously affects the indigenous culture, the traditional arts of music and building’s structures might become pictures or even wordings that written in the history. Therefore, globalization can brings positive and negative impacts to the art and creativity that practiced by indigenous people.

In conclusion, indigenous people from different parts of the world have been affected by globalization in economics, social behavior, religion, language, art and creativity. These impacts may be helpful or harmful to human beings. Although some may claim that globalization is good for the world as the interaction between countries is better, and even the indigenous was benefited in certain things, some may still suggest that globalization is harmful to indigenous in certain views. So, it is unarguable that either globalization is a good or bad develop of the world to indigenous cultures. However, globalization will continuously affect the indigenous in the future, as it was unstoppable when the technology provides such an environment for human beings.

Clothes for a Summer Hotel is a 1980 play by Tennessee Williams about the relationship between novelist F. Scott Fitzgerald and his wife Zelda. A critical and commercial failure, it was Williams' last play to debut on Broadway during his lifetime. The play takes place over a one-day visit Scott pays the institutionalized Zelda at Highland Mental Hospital in Asheville, North Carolina, with a series of flashbacks to their marriage in the twenties. Williams began work in 1976 on what he envisioned as a "long play" about the Fitzgeralds (he eventually cut it down), and had Geraldine Page in mind to play Zelda from the start.[1]

Williams biographer Donald Spoto has argued that Scott's visit to Zelda was a "clear" representation of the playwright's frequent visits to his mentally incapacitated sister, Rose, in mental hospitals.[2] Williams himself admitted a close identification with Fitzgerald, saying, "At one point I went through a deep depression and heavy drinking. And I, too, have gone through a period of eclipse in public favor....[The Fitzgeralds] embody concerns of my own, the tortures of the creative artist in a materialist society....They were so close to the edge. I understood the schizophrenia and the thwarted ambition."[3]

After an unsuccessful out-of-town tryout in Washington, Clothes for a Summer Hotel opened at Broadway's Cort Theatre on March 26, 1980, with José Quintero directing and Page and Kenneth Haigh leading the cast. The play was interpreted by critics as a literal biography of the Fitzgeralds "that got its facts wrong" rather than a metaphorical play that alluded to Williams' life.[4] Walter Kerr of The New York Times even faulted the play for "the fact that Mr. Williams's personal voice is nowhere to be heard."[5] In addition to receiving poor critical notices, the play opened at the same time that New Yorkers were dealing with a heavy blizzard and a transit strike, and subsequently closed after fourteen performances.[6] As a result of the play's critical failure, Williams vowed that he would "never open a play in New York again....I can't get good press from the New York Times, and [critics] Harold Clurman, Brendan Gill and Jack Kroll hate me....I put too much of my heart in [my plays] to have them demolished by some querulous old aisle sitters."[7]

ike all current Aston Martin powerplants, the engine is hand-assembled at Aston Martin’s dedicated engine facility in Cologne, Germany. The classic 6.0-litre V12 features a number of power-increasing enhancements. These include a ‘by-pass’ engine air intake port that opens above 5500 rpm to allow more air into the engine, and re-profiled air inlet ports that further improve airflow into the combustion chamber. Combined with a compression ratio of 10.9:1, the result of these enhancements is prodigious power and torque: the DBS delivers 380 kW (510 bhp/517 PS) at 6500 rpm.

Ancient Egypt appeared in this world around 3100 b.c. At first, Ancient Egypt was divided into two religions, Lower Egypt and Upper Egypt. The Lower Egypt is allocated at the north of Nile River and near to the Mediterranean, while the Egypt was allocated at the south of Nile River. Soon, the people of Ancient Egypt started to plant and there was agricultural revolution happened at the Nile River’s delta. Since then, these two small villages became stronger in term of population and wealth. Later, these two villages was union by the Menes King. The king built up his capital in Memphis. There the civilization of Ancient Egypt begun.

In the earliest civilization, human started to build for living spaces to protect themselves from weather, wild animals, and any other forms of harming stuff. Later, human started to build for temples for their beliefs because religion was a very important role in the ancient daily life. Soon after, human fall in love with the art of building and they find it hard to stop building. Then human get bored building a simple floor attached with four simple walls and cover by a boring flat roof, they started to apply art into and onto the buildings. The buildings are no more simple buildings for simple functions. It brings delight and symbolism to human. These buildings are called architecture.

According to (Egyptian Mythology n.d.) the famous Egyptian Osiris myths, Osiris spread out the laws and order to the Ancient Egypt and also Egyptian how to farm. Then, he became a powerful respecting king. Osiris’s brother Seth jealous of him and he cut Osiris into many pieces and scattered them throughout Egypt. Osiris’s wife, Isis go around the Egypt to collect all the pieces of Osiris and made into wax duplicates, then placed in the temple to be worshipped. Isis preserved Osiris’s body with linen bandages and used her magic and breathed life back into Osiris. Osiris then rose as a God-King and he chose to rule the underworld. This is where the roots of mummification and rebirth into the afterworld began.

Ancient Egyptians believe that their life do not stop on the day when they are dead. They believe that even the body is dead, “Ka”, the guardian of oneself which does not affect anything during lifetime, would be going to a blessed place called, Afterworld. The “Ka” will be waiting for the union with the body in the future to achieve an eternity life. In the Ancient Egyptians belief, everyone would have a soul besides the body and Ka. The soul will be flying freely when the body is dead. The soul will protect the dead body from the evil spirit at night.

Besides, Ancient Egyptians have a very strong belief in many god and goddess. The god and goddess are Amun-Re( the sun god, also consider as the king of the gods), Osiris (the god of agriculture and ruler of dead), Isis (the protector of children who is gifted with magical powers), Anubis (ancient god of dead), Thoth (the god of writing and wisdom), Hathor (goddess of the sky, love, music and dancing), Ptah (god of artists and craftsmen), Sobek (god of water), Neith (ancient goddess of war and wisdom) and Set (protector of Egypt). As the Ancient Egyptians believed in god and goddess, they put a lot of effort in building temples. The interior of temples is the most mysterious place in Ancient Egypt as there are only a few people would be allowed to see the interior of temples because they believe that temples are the dwelling place of god and goddess.

Ancient Egypt Architecture can be easily seen in Temple. The reason behind this is Temple is not only the dwelling places of god and goddess but it is also the place where festival celebrations are held. Besides, temples have other function as well. For instances, according to Edgar (n.d.), temples are acting as fortresses, administrative centers and concrete expression of propaganda or royal retreats. If to compare the function of Ancient Egyptian’s temples to the present building, Ancient Egyptian’s temple is the combination of a civic center, a government office, conference center, and religion center. In short, Architecture of Ancient Egypt is mostly to be seen in “temples” because temple is an essential role in Ancient Egypt.

Since then, a completed temple is a very complex structure that comprise of religious structure and other supplementary buildings such as, administrative offices, storage areas, gardens, schools, and libraries, stated by Andrews (2001). In the religious part, there are divided into several zones. Each zone is increasingly sacred than the zone before, stated by Andrews (2001). The outer zone or outer court which usually comprises an approach and entrance is the zone that opened to the public. For the interior of temples or the inner hall, only priests that are purified are allowed to go inside. Then, in the inner sanctuary zone, only king and very high ranked priests are permitted to be into it. These temples’ laws that practiced by the Ancient Egyptians explain the reason for temple to become such a mysterious place.

When discussing on the essential elements of Ancient Egyptians’ Temples’ Entrance, the impressive and massive Pylon Gateways are always come to the mind. According to Canadian Museum of Civilization Corporation (1998), these pylon gateways were very impressive and it is built to honor the dead and gods. However, these pylon gateways are in fact the structure part of the essentials elements of the Ancient Egyptian’s temples entrance. According to Andrews (n.d.), “The actual elements of the temples entrance usually included the landing quays, and processional ways that preceded the temple's outer enclosure walls, which finally led to the pylon gateways themselves.”

The importance of landing quays in Ancient Egyptians’ Temples’ design is simply because of the geographic factor, the Nile River. As Nile River known as the scared river, is the most popular transport system to Ancient Egyptians, Temples are mostly build near to the river or at the river bank. Thus, the landing quay element is usually representing the entrance of the temple. Andrews (n.d.) stated that canals cut back from the Nile River are to stabilize the waterway as well as reducing the distance between the Temple and the landing quay. Thus, mostly the landing quay will be built on canals. Besides, landing quay is also design for the first initial greeting point during a ceremony is held.

Next, the causeways and the path which leading people from landing quay to the temple is also an essential elements in the Ancient Egyptians’ temples’ design. In the earliest time, the path to the temple was only paved. However, later the pathway is completed with statuary which served as protective elements. After the Second Intermediate Period, they often use Sphinxes that have a human face with lion body. The Sphinxes were believed as a guardian of the temple that would stop any evil or unfriendly out of the temple. For example, the pathway leading to the temple of Amun at Karnak is accomplished with ram headed Sphinxes along the pathway.

Then, another vital element in the Ancient Egyptians’ temples is the Way station. The function of it is to provide resting area for the ceremonial processions. It is only big enough for housing a low altar. However, there is no rules stated that the design of the Way station have to be simple. After that, obviously there is Enclosure Walls around the temples. These enclosure walls have a lot of function. It is built to protect the temples from the enemies attack or any chaos situation happens at the countryside. These walls are a mean to the Ancient Egyptians that it block out all the chaos of the outside world, and create a clean and sacred space for god’s dwelling. More to the point, the enclosure walls are often built in concave forms and convex section. The reason behind this is to prevent the walls from cracking due to shrinkage of the bricks or swelling ground during the Nile floods stated by Andrews (n.d.). In addition, Andrews (n.d.) states that the Ancient Egyptians often use mud brick to built the enclosure walls. While in they use framework of wooden beams and reed mats as the material in the enclosure walls. Most of these enclosure walls are 10 meters thick. Some of these walls also built with bastions or fortified gateways for defensive purposes. In another words, these enclosure walls functions to protect the sacred temples from dangerous like natural disaster, war, and evil.

Finally, before the end of the Entrance Part of Ancient Egyptians’ temples, there is a very significant element, pylons. For your information, the first pylon shape of architecture is first seen in Ancient Egyptians’ Temple. Pylon is the monumental gateway to the temple. Pylon is the most unessential part in the Ancient Egyptians’ temple and it is usually built last, according to ‘Glossary of Egyptian Mythology’ (1997). It has a similar function with the enclosure walls, which have the main objective to protect the sacred temple from the dangerous of outside world. Pylon is a very interesting element in the Ancient Egyptians’ temples because when a pharaoh extends the temple, he usually will not destroy the old pylons but remove it into the new built pylon. Thus, it is very wonderful and brings delights when seeing the architectures within and architecture which is the pylons within the pylon.

After the passed by the artistic and well designed entrance, the first thing that comes to eyes after the great pylon gateway is the outer courtyard. The outer courtyards are mostly designed for celebration gathering. This is well explained by the heliograph that inscribed on the wall and column on the courtyard, as stated by Andrews (n.d.). This courtyard has different function for different temples. However, according to Andrews (n.d.), different temples would have different addition function of the courtyard. This courtyard is surrounded by colonnade or portico at both sides that form an axis that connect the pylon gateway to the hypostyle hall. Colonnade or portico is a series of columns with an ambulatory on top of it. These columns are always inscribed with heliograph on it. These columns are mostly will have a column base at the bottom, followed by the column shaft and a column capital at the top part of the column. In Ancient Egypt, there are several type of column which is divided into two categories, the plant style column and None Plant Style Columns. The plant style column includes fluted Column, Palmiform Columns, Lotiform Columns, Papyriform Columns, Coniform Columns, Tent Pole Columns, Campaniform Columns, and Composite Columns. While none plant style columns consist of Hathoric Columns and Osiride Pillars. These columns actually help a lot in achieving great architecture for appreciation in this outer courtyard. It is also a significant element for Ancient Architecture where most of the ancient architecture is going very detail in term of ornamentation on the structure which is very unlikely the modern architecture that emphasize a lot in ‘less is more’.

Besides, in this outer courtyard there is always a great altar placed for worshiping or offerings. According to Andrews (n.d.), the great altar is usually allocated at the one side of the central axis. In addition, there is usually a specific area for lodging petitions, meeting with the priests on personal matter or conducting business with the temple officials within the outer courtyard. As stated by Andrews (n.d.), private statuaries besides king and gods could be found in the outer courtyard since the Middle Kingdom Period onwards. These private statuaries are always in the form of squatting on the ground or kneeling before a deity in humble reverence. This statuary is very much related to the belief of after world. Ancient Egyptian believes that their soul needs to be protected after their body died. Thus, sacred temple is the best place to keep their soul out of evil things.

Mysterious of the temple begin after the outer courtyard. Only purified priests are allowed to access beyond the outer courtyard. The first part of the temple after the outer courtyard is the hypostyle hall. This hypostyle hall is functioning as chamber. The interesting part of this hall is the large amount of massive columns. The columns are all well crafted. These columns actually form a forest in the hypostyle hall. For instance, the Karnak temple alone has 134 columns with some stand up to 24 meters tall. This column forest will be acting as a screen or partition that blocks the views of the inner sacred part of the temple complex from the outer courtyard. However, according to Andrews (n.d.), on the center of the hypostyle hall, the columns are separated and form an axis from the entrance leading to the sacred areas of the temple. Thus, he claimed that the real element that makes the sacred area of the temple hidden is actually the darkness inside the hypostyle hall as it has only a row of clerestory windows with gratings set high in the wall to capture little skylight into the hall.

Besides, the “column forest” in the hypostyle hall also has its symbolic function besides its physical function of supporting the massive sandstone architraves and roofing slabs of the hypostyle hall. In Ancient Egyptians’ Myth, they believe that the celestial ream of the sky was supported above the earth on columns, claimed Andrews (n.d.). Besides there is also another evidence to support the Myth which is a quote by Amenhotep III, the pharos who builds the Temple of Karnak, “The pillars in the temple of Karnak reach heaven kike the four pillars of heaven.” Once again, this explains that Ancient Egyptian architecture is very much related to their religious and belief. They build according to their Mythologies principles and they build for their religious function as these are almost everything in them.

When going deeper into the more sacred part of a small temple, it is usually the sanctuary. However, as for the big temple complex, there are sometimes built with some halls before the sanctuary. Andrews (n.d.) believes that these halls are built or designed for the purpose of sacrificing to offer Altar. His point is the Altar would be offered in the sanctuary itself if the halls are not designed for the sacrificing purpose. However, in my opinion, there halls also serve as a sacred place to offer other gods besides the main god for the temple. This theory is based belief in god and goddess of Ancient Egyptians.

Andrews (n.d.) states that “just prior to the sanctuary there will mostly have a Barque Chapel. This room is serving as a store room for the portable Barque, which is the “transportation” of the god. This Barque is always in a boat’s mean, but it is not the real form of a boat. The reason behind this is because the vital transportation in Ancient Egypt is undeniably the Nile River. Thus, boat or ship has deep meaning to the Ancient Egyptian. There are some evidences showing the importance of the ships in Ancient Egypt, which is the quote from the Pharaoh Ramses III:

I built you ships, freight ships, arched ships with rigging, plying the Big Green (the sea). I manned them with archers, captains and innumerable sailors, to bring the goods of the Land of Tyre and the foreign countries at the end of the world to your storage rooms at Thebes the Victorious. (This quote means that the Pharaoh Ramses III uses ships to extend his power.) In short, I think that in Ancient Egypt’s Architecture is always influenced by the 3 main things, the Belief of afterworld, Belief in Gods and Goddess, and the Nile River.

After the Barque Chapel, we finally come to the deepest, most sacred and the most mysterious part of the temple, the inner Sanctuary. The Sanctuary is the holy room of the temple for the placement of god shrines and the main Altar. Thus, in term of hierarchy, the Sanctuary is the most important element in the temple complex. Thus for the Architecture Design, the location of the sanctuary is always at the central axis of the temple. Besides, Ancient Egyptian also believes that the Sacred Sanctuary room is the gate way to heaven. Therefore, the Sanctuary room acts as the gateway in the Axis principle which symbolizes the gateway to the heaven. In addition, the sanctuary room is always allocated at the most rear of the temple. The reason behind this is because it signifies that there are no other rooms in this world is beyond the sanctuary rooms except the heaven which the only way to enter is from the sanctuary room. According to Andrews (n.d.), Ancient Egyptians believe that the sanctuary room is the physical extension of heaven. The form of the sanctuary room itself is in a deep and narrow form that would achieve an axis to the heaven. On the other hand, the sanctuary room is purest part of the temple that it is restricted to the king and high ranked purified priests only. This room is so holy and so pure that when an unpurified object or person stepped into the sanctuary room, the room is considered as contaminated. Therefore a complete cleaning process or rededication is required in order to purify the holy sanctuary room.

The last room in Ancient Egyptians’ temple is always the sanctuary room. However, as the temple evolved, new element or new room is added to the back of the sanctuary room. This room is named the “Hearing Ears”, which is specially designed for the common people to offer the god. This room is attached directly to the sanctuary room. However there are no any connections that allow people to access into the sacred part of the temple through the “Hearing Ears”. This room is simply functioning as mean to the common Aancient Egyptian to access the inner sanctuary indirectly. This room is usually placed with a statue of god or sometime only a crafting of a pair of the god ears. In short, this “Hearing Ears” is an additional room that attached to the outer enclosure wall of the temple in the late development of Ancient Egyptians’ temple.

According to Andrews (n.d.), the temple complex cannot be isolated, it needs to build at an estate with other elements or facilities to support the temple or get support from the temple. These facilities are some related to the religious while some are serving as a administrative center. These facilities are mammisis which is a birth house for pharaohs, sacred lake that providing a pool for priest to clean themselves, sanatoria which is equivalent to present medical center, the house of life that is like our university and administrative center, and living quarter that providing living space for the priests.

Mammisis, is a structure that acting as birth house. It is very much related to the religious significant. It signifies the mysterious birth of the Ancient god and also celebration for the god. For the Ancient Egyptian, there believe that their king or pharaoh is god. Thus, the Mammisis is also the place to divine birth of Kings or Pharaoh. This house is usually allocated at the right angle of the main temple axis. The mammisis house is usually surrounding with the peristyle structure with walls erected between the columns. The wall is always decorated with text or heliographs that explain the birth of a god and his/her parents. Thus, in different temples that offering different main god will have different decorative on the Mammisis’s walls. For instance, according to Andrews (n.d.), in th mammisi of the Temple of Hathor celebrating the birth of Ihy even portrays his formation on the potter's wheel. In brief, mammisis are functioning as a place to divine the birth of the pharaohs with the god.

In conclusion, the sanctuary room is the main objective of building a temple. The other elements are added to accomplish the importance and the hierarchy of the sanctuary room. On the other hand, the Ancient Egyptians’ temple complex is as complex as a large shopping mall in the present day. However, the scale of the temple complex to the ancient people is like a city scale to our present life. The architecture of the temple complex is very much related to the religious and the belief of afterworld. Besides, there are also some elements that explain the Ancient Egyptians lifestyle for instance the importance of the boat to Ancient Egyptians is reflected by the Barque element in the temple.

In my opinion, the construction of the Ancient Egyptians’ temple is no more interesting to our present construction because the temple are all built by solid construction which has really a lot of limitation to our building forms and the space, for instance, a series of large opening is very hard to achieve in solid construction. Besides, it is also seems to be impossible to have a large roofed area without huge and massive columns in solid construction. However, I think that the architecture elements that could inspire us are the way of dividing space. The spaces in the temple are defined clearly by uniqueness of each space. Besides, the uniqueness is not only limited to define spaces, but it also has its function and its symbolic meanings. For example, the pylon gateway is very much signified by its massive pylon. To relate to the present, in a shopping mall or other complexes, most of the time there are not clear in defining the zone or area because it is lacking of its own uniqueness of that particular space like the Ancient Egyptians’ temple complexes do.

Furthermore, the temple complex can be related to the urban design as well. A city could be design accordingly to the structure of the temple complex that has hierarchy of each zone or area. In city as well, the sanctuary room could be an administrative zone which is restricted to authorize people only. While the hypostyle hall could be all the office building zone and the outer courtyard as the opened public areas like gardens for outdoor activities. Then, as for the colonnade or portico that at two side of the outer courtyard can be transformed into commercial zone and residential zone at the both sides of the opened public areas. Next, the pylon gateway can be changed to the Education zone for schools, libraries, museums, and so on. For the entrance area, it could be transformed into the entrance to the city like seaport, airport, bus stop, and other transportation hub. As for the facilities from the outside of temple, it can be added with facilities like Fire department, Hospital, Industrial zones, Agriculture zones, and other element that is supporting the city. The sacred lake can be transformed into a tourism spot, while the living quarter can be changed to the residential area for authorized people like administrator. In short, the architecture of Ancient Egyptians’ temple complex is so great in defining spaces that even be transformed into a layout of a city.

1.0 Introduction
This report is about the presentation on the topic of “Empire of Architecture”. In this presentation, we were researching on the British Empire. The objective of this presentation is to study the similarities and differences on how British colonized India and Malaya. Researches were caring out within 1 week through reading. Most of the pictures were getting from internet due to the reason that pictures found in books are black and white pictures, which is not suitable for presentation.

1.1 British Empire

During the 19th Century, European countries started to spread their power outside Europe to get the resources such as tin, rubber and so on. British at that time was a wealthy country, and it became the leader in this trend. In the present day, there were over 50 members of Commonwealth Countries, who had been colonized by British. These commonwealth countries is including Canada, South Africa, India, Malaysia and Singapore (Malaya), Australia and New Zealand.

1.2 Empire of Architecture

British was colonized India for over 100 years. Besides, British also colonized Malaya over 50years. British, a small country compare to India, were able to control the Indian and Malayan for so many years. The answer to it is Architecture. British used good Urban Planning to control the local people. Thus, the colonization of British is been titled “The Empire of Architecture.
1.3 Urban Planning

British had a well urban planning in the India and Malaya that enable British to control the local people. Basically, British were using the 4 major points in its urban planning, which are the Cantonment, the Isolation and Segregation, the Communal Building and the Bungalow. In this presentation, we are going to discuss the similarity and differences of the urban planning applied in these two different country.

2.0 Cantonment

The word cantonment is derived from the French word canton, which means corner or district. The “cantonment” is a temporary or semi-permanent military quarters typically in India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.

2.1 Cantonment in India

When British succeed conquer India, they have a problem in controlling the Indian. They have limited military forces in term of “quantity”. The British army in Indian was only a few compare to the Indian. Thus, British need to strengthen their military force. They did a well Urban Planning to strengthen their military force. British used the Cantonment concept to separate the people into many districts to weaken the Indian forces.

However, British military was not able to fully control the Indian if outburst happened. Thus, British got another brilliant idea to reinforce their military by the railway system. British used railway to link their entire military cantonment together. Whenever there is an outburst happening in a cantonment, the army from other cantonment will be able to give help in a very short time. Thus, British were able to control and conquer India for over 100 years.

2.2 Cantonment In Malaya

British went into Malay, spreading like a virus, and finally colonized the whole peninsular of Malaya including Singapore. British have fewer problems in controlling the Malayan because the forces against British were lesser. Besides, before British colonized Malaya, their already have a very strong military force in Sri Lanka and India, which is very near to Malaya. Thus, British did not really need the Cantonment system in Malaya.

However, railway system was brought into Malay as well. The purpose is different. In India, the main objective of the railway system is to reinforce the Military. In Malaya, the main objective is to reinforce the economy in Malaya. The reason is, Malaya was rich of the natural sources such as tin, rubber, and coco. The railway system accelerated the transportation and production. This profit British a lot. Thus, British could get the money armor British army.

3.0 Isolation and Segregation

The main objective of the Isolation and Segregation is to reduce the local forces against British. However, the application in India and Malaya is totally different. In which means British were designing the urban plan specific to the problem and not just copy and paste the solution to the other. In architecturally, British did a well site analysis before they start designing.
3.1 Isolation in India

In India, British isolated themselves with the India. The main purpose of it is to influence the Indian thoughts. British wanted the Indian to think that British were here to teach them what civilization is all about. British used the “White Black town” to achieve that where British will stay in the wealthy and clean White town while Indian remain in a lower class of living environment. Indian was restricted to access into the white town. The aim of the “white black town” concept is to plant a though of “God-like British” into the Indian mind.

The white town is like an exhibition hall for British lifestyle and the black town is like the audience seats. Everyday the Indian will see the British having parties in the garden. Gradually, Indian started to accept British and admire them. Thus, again British were success to reduce the Indian force against British.
3.2 Segregation in Malaya

In Malaya, there are 3 main races, Malay, Chinese, and Indian. There was no strong force against British. However, if the 3 races are united as like the Malaysia today, British will have a big problem. Thus, British applied segregation in Malaya to avoid the unity among these 3 races. In another words, British did not need to weaken the Malayan but needed prevention on the unity of Malayan which would make Malayan stronger.

The main objective of British in Malaya is for natural sources. Therefore, British need to segregate the 3 races in Malaya while on the other hand need them to help in the economic sector. British again came out with a brilliant urban design. British separate the 3 races into different sector in term of economic activities. For instance, British educated Malay work for British in Administration, vernacular educated Malay stay in “Kampung”(village) remain as fisherman and padi farmer. While the Chinese was businessman in town and tin miner in mining sector. For Indian, they work in rubber estate.

This segregation prevents interaction among these 3 races. Consequently, there are no unity happened. When there are no unity among the 3 races, British can control the Malaya without much trouble. Therefore, British keep on eating the wealth in Malay (natural sources), and continue be rich and powerful for a couples of decades.
4.0 Communal Building

Communal building is the space designed for community which we usually named it public place. Examples of communal buildings include post office, courts, town hall, government offices, churches, schools and etc. Communal building was the always the identity of a country.

The idea of communal building is to create an illusion to the local people that they are living in the British. The application of this concept is that all the communal buildings were built using British architecture. The scale of communal building is big compare to the local building which reminds the local that British are greater. Besides, British were also aim to strip off the local identities of the colonized countries by buildings with pure European architecture. As a result, British were success to make the local forget about their own national identities.

The same concept and application was applied in India and Malaya. Both applications are success to make British stay long in these 2 countries.

The same concept was continuing to today architecture in urban planning. For instance in Malaysia, Putra Jaya, the urban planed city where all the government buildings were all built with Islamic architecture. When traveling in the city, it reminds people that this is Islamic country.
5.0 Bungalow

Bungalow is the word derived from the Indian local hut called bangala. Bungalow was designed by the British in their colonized countries. The design of an early bungalow was purely British Architecture. Building materials were imported from the British. Bungalow was built without much consideration to the climate. For instance, they have a chimney on the roof which does not serve any function in India and Malaya climate. But, as the Bungalow evolved, it started to have elements such as high ceiling, pitch roof, and verandah to respond to the local climate.

The main objective of the bungalow is to show the power of British to the local people like Indian and Malayan. Bungalow is the symbol for high class wealthy people. British tended to make the local think that British are higher above them. Most of the people staying in British bungalow are the powerful people such as governor.

Bungalows in India are less integrated to the local climate while on the other hand; Malaya bungalows have the passive climate design in it. The reason is that British came into India much earlier than into Malaya.
6.0 Conclusion

In conclusion, British have a strong army to conquer India and Malaya. In terms of controlling the local people, British have another strong weapon which is Architecture. British used Architecture to control the society activities such as economic activities, educational activities, lifestyles and so on. Besides, most importantly, British used architecture to control the mindscape of the people. British create many illusions to the local people and make them thinks that British are here to teach them civilization. British were using architecture to make the local people think that British are God-like. Thus, the local was willing to be ruled by the British before they had the consciousness of the national identity. In short, 2 different countries; 1 way to conquer; ARCHITECTURE is the power.

Yep pretty soon, your mobile phone cameras might rival that of you normal point and shoot cameras with this latest development. Kodak has combined their Color Filter Pattern technology with a new CMOS pixel to create the KODAK KAC-05020 Image Sensor, the world’s first 1.4 micron, 5 megapixel device. Designed for mass-consumer camera applications such as mobile phones, Kodak’s new sensor enables a new level of resolution in small optical formats, using significantly smaller pixels.

But unlike other small-pixel sensors which can produce poor images, especially under low light conditions, the 1.4 micron pixel used in the KAC-05020 Image Sensor changes this convention, providing image quality that can equal or surpass what is available from current devices using larger, 1.75 micron pixel CMOS designs.

“Camera phones and other small-pixel consumer imaging devices often suffer from poor performance, especially under low light conditions. To manufacture sensors that utilize these very small pixels – only two to three times the wavelength of visible light – we needed to challenge everything we knew about pixel and sensor design,” said Chris McNiffe, General Manager of Kodak’s Image Sensor Solutions business. “By completely rethinking the design of the CMOS pixel and leveraging our work with high sensitivity color filter patterns and algorithms, Kodak was able to develop this remarkable new sensor that will enable a level of imaging performance previously unavailable from CMOS devices.”

Key to the performance of this new sensor is the KODAK TRUESENSE CMOS Pixel, a re-engineering of the fundamental design and architecture of traditional CMOS pixels. In a standard CMOS pixel, signal is measured by detecting electrons that are generated when light interacts with the surface of the sensor. As more light strikes the sensor, more electrons are generated, resulting in a higher signal at each pixel. In the KODAK TRUESENSE CMOS Pixel, however, the underlying “polarity” of the silicon is reversed, so that the absence of electrons is used to detect a signal. This change enabled a series of improvements to the design and structure of the pixel that ultimately results in CMOS imaging performance that rivals that available from CCD image sensors.

Light sensitivity in the new sensor is enhanced through the use of the recently announced KODAK TRUESENSE Color Filter Pattern, which adds panchromatic, or “clear,” pixels to the red, green and blue pixels already on the sensor. Since these pixels are sensitive to all wavelengths of visible light, they collect a significantly higher proportion of the light striking the sensor. This provides a 2x to 4x increase in sensitivity to light (from one to two photographic stops) compared to current sensor designs, improving performance in low light and reducing motion blur in action shots.

At 5 million pixels, the KAC-05020 provides the highest resolution available in the popular ¼” optical format, and enables imagery up to ISO 3200 and support for full 720p video at 30 fps. The sensor is also supported by the Texas Instruments’ OMAPTM and OMAP-DM solutions, enabling a host of KODAK Image Processing and Enhancement Features (such as digital image stabilization, rapid auto-focus, red-eye reduction, and facial recognition) that provide digital camera-like performance in a camera phone.

由19世纪德国民间文学研究者格林兄弟编写的童话《白雪公主》在美国迪斯尼公司的推广下名扬全球。许多小朋友看后都想知道，究竟白雪公主是否真有其人？魔镜是真是假？小矮人又来自何方？这些问题现在都有答案了。经过17年的考证和讨论，德国西南部小镇洛尔的童话学者自信地表示，白雪公主来自他们的家乡。一时之间，洛尔成为全球白雪公主迷关注的焦点，远自日本甚至哈萨克斯坦的电视臺均来採访。洛尔童话协会主席巴特尔斯表示，白雪公主名叫玛丽亚‧冯‧埃特尔，是于1729年6月15日在洛尔出生的贵族。玛丽亚成长的古堡现在变成了一座博物馆。馆内有一面"会说话的"镜子---这种发声玩具在18世纪曾风行一时，而洛尔当年正是制造这种"魔镜"的中心。这块镜子的主人不是别人，正是玛丽亚的"恶毒"后母，即父亲菲利普的第二任妻子克劳迪娅。巴特尔斯表示："玛丽亚小时因天花视力受损，现存的记录都说她是善良好心的女孩子。或许人们下意识地站在玛丽亚一边对抗后母，因此将她后母塑造成心肠恶毒的人。"七名小矮人来自西部比伯的矿场，由于矿洞窄小，只能容得下身材矮小的矿工．他们为免被落石所伤，通常会戴着色彩鲜艳的头巾。而毒苹果则是涂上了当地盛产的一种植物提炼出来的毒素。

This can include a specific governmental organisation such as, in the UK, the National Health Service or a cooperation across the National Health Service and Social Services as in Shared Care. Before the term "health care" became popular, English-speakers referred to medicine or to the health sector and spoke of the treatment and prevention of illness and disease. In most developed countries and many developing countries health care is provided to everyone regardless of their ability to pay. The National Health Service in the United Kingdom was the world's first universal health care system provided by government. It was established in 1948 by Clement Atlee's Labour government. Alternatively, compulsory government funded health insurance with nominal fees can be provided, as with Italy, which, according to the World Health Organisation, has the second-best health system in the world.[2] Other examples are Medicare in Australia, established in the 1970s by the Labor government, and by the same name Medicare was established in Canada between 1966 and 1984. Universal health care contrasts to the systems like health care in the United States or South Africa, though South Africa is one of the many countries attempting health care reform.[3] The United States is the only wealthy, industrialized nation that does not provide universal health care

The most expensive coffee in the world does not hail from Jamaica or Hawaii, but instead from Indonesia.
Kopi Luwak the most expensive coffee in the world does exist, and those who drink the expensive coffee insist that it is made from coffee beans eaten, partly digested and then excreted by the Common palm civet, a weasel-like animal.
“Kopi” the Indonesian word for coffee along with “luwak” is local name of this animal which eats the raw red coffee beans. The civet digests the soft outer part of the coffee cherry, but does not digest the inner beans and excretes them.
Apparently the internal digestion ends up adds a unique flavor to the beans, removing the bitter flavor, and then beans are then picked up by locals and sold. The most expensive coffee beans can cost up to $600 a pound, and up to $50 per cup, if you can get over the fact that you are drinking such a strange brew.
You would know if you drank the most expensive coffee in the world, because the quantities of it are tiny amounts.
